Responsibilities & Duties
- Handles daily requests in a timely efficient manner. Offers assistance to all areas of surgery as needed and other areas of the hospital during downtime. Assist in transporting patient prn.
- Prepares mop water in utility room and makes sure the utility room is stocked with cleaning supplies.
- Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. Performs general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage area.
- Responsible for room turn-arounds, either independently or with team members.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
- Sterilization Process:
- Ensures proper operation of autoclave units prior to use on a daily basis
- Runs biological and chemical tests at beginning of the day shift and each load prn. Records results in appropriate log books.
- Inspects autoclaves for visible signs of malfunction and reports to surgery manager.
- Processes or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to CS.
- Uses knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization.
- Processes all items appropriately using steam sterilization.
- Maintains appropriate biological testing on routine basis and documents results as required.
- Knowledgeable regarding handling and care of instruments, tray preparation and special procedure items.
- Performs tray assembly, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable supplies for sterilization. Monitors sterility dates on supplies.
- Properly loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers, and all general equipment using biological and chemical control tests as required according to AORN and AMMI standards.
- Professional Requirements:
- Completes competencies outlined in syllabus and annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Completes in-services and returns them in a timely fashion.
- Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goal of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
- Supply/Material Accountability:
- Stores all supplies and equipment; including responsibility of replacing screws and plates in instrument trays.
- Assists with processing department supply charges and any other clerical work related to the Central Sterilization, as requested.
Qualifications:
Education: high school diploma or equivalent; Evidence of continuing education in central sterilization procedures.
Certification: BLS Certification within 6 months of the start date.
Experience: Experience in C/S preferred or medical related background.
Working Conditions
Job responsibilities require working under constant exposure to noise, lighting, and/or temperature levels. Exposure to irritating, unpleasant, or hazardous elements or conditions (i.e. blood, chemicals, and infectious diseases) is constant.
